The identity of the gunman who killed about 50 people at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday night, has been revealed as Stephen Paddock, 64, a resident of Mesquite, Nevada.
Police said he fired hundreds of shots from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort into the crowd of 22,000 attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival.
Gunshots were reported to police at around 10:00 p.m. SWAT teams were deployed to the hotel and found the suspect dead in his hotel room with at least 10 rifles.
“We believe the individual killed himself,” Sheriff Joseph Lombardo of the Las Vegas police told CNN.
Video filmed by witnesses showed thousands of people scattering and screaming as the sound of rapid gunfire rang throughout the hotel.
Police said that Paddock, an accountant, had no criminal history.
Authorities contacted his brother, Eric Paddock, who said he was shocked by the news and did not understand what his motive was.
“We are completely dumbfounded. We can’t understand what happened,” he said.
With over 50 people killed and more than 400 were injured the Las Vegas shooting is the deadliest in modern U.S. history.
