Residents in Rivers State have vowed to vote against the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), in 2019, following what they refer to as the “One chance ride”, the State Governor, Nyesom Wike has allegedly taken them on.
A cross section of respondents, who spoke with Africa Update, said they were marveled at the slow pace of infrastructural development in the state, under the watch of Governor Wike, and expressed disappointment at the fanfare politicians have attached to projects and policies which fall below their expectations.
Reiterating that they were not surprised at this trend, because the former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was instrumental to the emergence of Wike had neglected the Niger Delta Region in terms of infrastructural development.
Speaking further, they however noted that the few projects embarked upon, especially road rehabilitation, were carried out in Ikwerre communities, while roads in the Old Port Harcourt Township and Borikiri were neglected.
They expressed worry at the obvious neglect of other ethnic groups in the State, and pointed out that the assessment of the Wike led government became necessary, when praise singers embarked on celebrating him as “Mr. Project”.
They argued that the title best suit the immediate past Governor and current Minister for Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who within two years in office, transformed the landscape of Rivers State, by constructing the Ikwerre Road, Ada Goerge Road, Agip fly over, the interchange at Oil Mill Junction and several other roads, which have resulted in the massive development of neighboring communities.
They stated that the achievements of Amaechi are laudable and people oriented, when compared with the level of development in the State.
They stressed that it was necessary for citizens to speak against the current trend, which rather than fulfill promises made during 2015 campaign by the PDP, current realities are a far cry from what was promised the people.
